"President Barack Obama: The Man and His Journey"
By Patty Gopez
Every U.S. citizen remembers where they were the night Barack Obama won the election to become the 44th President of the United States... but just how much does the public know about Barack Obama, the man?
That's where the film President Barack Obama: The Man and His Journey comes in, promising viewers "an intimate portrait of Barack Obama."
Released on Inauguration Day, the film is narrated by NAACP Image Award winning actor Blair Underwood and features commentary from notable figures such as Martin Luther King, III, George Lopez, Hill Harper, Roland Martin, Linda Johnson Rice, and Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., as well as various writers, professors and even supporters off the street. The film presents itself chronologically, starting with Obama’s early life to the start of his campaign as a nominee to becoming the Democratic candidate to eventually being elected the 44th President of the United States, in which the film comes to an end.
Overall, it was a thorough film, answering the questions many people have about President Obama. It gave excellent documentation on his personal story as well as his political career, focusing more so on the latter. Another [positive] aspect of the film was that it featured a variety of people from all walks of life who support President Obama, backing up their support with personal anecdotes of what his election means to them. However, the meat of the film is basically what we Americans have all witnessed during the presidential campaigns -- making the film a good recap for viewers, but not bringing anything new to the table. Nonetheless, President Barack Obama: The Man and His Journey is a film that every Obama fan should have.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
